The oceans cover three quarters of the Earth’s surface and contain 97% of our planet’s water. Today, over three billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods. Yet the human footprint on the oceans is becoming an ever-greater threat. With over 1,000 scientists working in some 50 laboratories, the CNRS is one of the world’s leading research organizations, capable of forging multiple alliances between all disciplines – oceanography, physics, sociology, biology, ecology, geology, mathematics, chemistry, economics and even philosophy – to study the ocean in all its dimensions.
To support the organization of research and cooperation on this subject, the CNRS and its institutes have drawn up a scientific strategy. The aim is to conduct interdisciplinary research and respond to the ocean-related questions posed by society and decision-makers.
The study and conservation of the ocean is one of the priorities of the CNRS Foundation, along with its umbrella foundations such as the Ocean Sustainability Foundation, the Science4Reefs Foundation and the 1 Ocean Foundation.
