The Big Blob Record in Châteauroux
The CNRS Foundation was at the Lycée Blaise Pascal in Châteauroux on Friday June 3, for the “Big Blob Record”. Over 500 students and “blobbers” from all over France came to make the world’s longest single-cell organism: 53.9 m long!
During the day, a sale of goodies made by the young students raised funds to support research!
On this occasion, the students presented a cheque for the proceeds of the sales to the Foundation. Many thanks to them and to all those who helped make the day a success.
As part of the Year of Biology 2021/2022, CNRS has launched two participatory science projects: “Behind the blob, research” and the “Raise your blob” program.
“Behind the blob, research” is a participatory science project that has enabled several thousand volunteers, from the age of 8 upwards, to take part in a research project. Over a period ranging from one week to one month, depending on their availability, participants welcomed a blob, hydrated it and then fed it. They then simulated heat waves by varying the temperature at different frequencies and intensities.
“Élève ton blob” is a program run by nearly 5,000 schools from CE2 to terminale, under the leadership of the CNRS and more particularly of world specialist, researcher Audrey Dussutour, which has involved comparing the behavior of blobs on Earth with that of their space-dwelling counterparts.
