With the onset of Covid-19, and the characteristic lung problems that followed, Vincent Fleury, CNRS research director at the Matière et Systèmes Complexes (MSC) laboratory, a joint unit of the CNRS and the University of Paris, began to investigate lung regeneration. His research has led him to study alternative methods for stimulating organ growth, and to focus on children born with limbs that are too short (a phenomenon known as hypoplasia), who could benefit directly from the fruits of his experiments. These rare pathologies are impossible to treat and severely handicap patients in their daily lives. Our working hypotheses therefore point to compensatory growth of the limbs in an attempt to correct the malformations.
To date, results in animal models look promising.
