CRISPR knockout (KO) screens have identified host factors regulating replication of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Identification of host factors regulating replication of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

With support from the CNRS Foundation, Caroline Goujon, an Inserm research fellow working at the CNRS Institut de Recherche en Infectiologie in Montpellier, and her colleagues have obtained major results in the identification of human genes regulating replication of the coronavirus responsible for the Covid-19 epidemic, SARS-CoV-2.

Some of the genes identified also modulate replication of the highly pathogenic Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and seasonal human coronaviruses (HCoV), responsible for colds every winter. These results contribute to our understanding of SARS-CoV-2 replication and provide a list of potential targets for therapeutic interventions.

An article has just appeared in the prestigious journal Nature Genetics “Bidirectional genome-wide CRISPR screens reveal host factors regulating SARS-CoV-2, MERS-CoV and seasonal HCoVs”.
