An international career in France, the USA, China and Luxembourg. Her gratitude and attachment to the CNRS have led her to make a generous donation to the CNRS Foundation, in support of research carried out in this prestigious institution.  <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Born in Luxembourg on July 20, 1950, Nelly Kieffer obtained a Dipl\u00f4me de Biologie M\u00e9dicale, IES, in Geneva, Switzerland in 1971. She began her career at the Hematology Laboratory of the H\u00f4pital Cantonal de Gen\u00e8ve, then at the Hematology Laboratory of the H\u00f4tel-Dieu in Paris (1972-1973). <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Nelly Kieffer passed away on August 3, 2021.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She then headed for Asia for the first time, joining the Chinese Red Cross Blood Transfusion Center in Taiwan from 1973 to 1975. She returned to Luxembourg in 1975 to work in the Immunology Department of the Laboratoire National de Sant\u00e9, then in the Hematology Laboratory of the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (1976-1979). <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Her interest in Asia led her to take a Dipl\u00f4me Sup\u00e9rieur in Chinese language and civilization at INALCO, Universit\u00e9 Paris III, in 1976.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As a doctoral student in the laboratory of Professor Jacques CAEN, U150 INSERM in Paris (1980 &#8211; 1984), she simultaneously obtained a Master&#8217;s degree in Biochemistry and a DES in Hematology from the University of Paris 7 in 1981. In 1982, she obtained a Dipl\u00f4me d&#8217;Etudes et de Recherche en Biologie Humaine in haematology, option biochemistry and physiology of haemostasis, at the Universit\u00e9 Paris 7. She prepared her thesis and obtained her Doctorat d&#8217;Etat in Human Biology from Paris 7 University in 1984.  <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She then passed the competitive examination for 1st class research fellow and began her career at CNRS in Professor Jean ROSA&#8217;s Laboratory, INSERM U91\/CNRS 607 at Henri Mondor Hospital in Cr\u00e9teil (1984-1988).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">L\u2019aventure am\u00e9ricaine de 1988 \u00e0 1990 la conduit \u00e0 \u00eatre \u00ab Visiting Scientist \u00bb au Laboratoire du Dr David PHILLIPS \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Californie \u00e0 San Francisco. Elle participe alors \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation de l\u2019entreprise COR Therapeutics Inc. L\u2019entreprise m\u00e8ne des travaux de recherche et d\u00e9veloppe des agents th\u00e9rapeutiques pour le traitement des maladies cardiovasculaires s\u00e9v\u00e8res, notamment pour la pr\u00e9vention des embolies avec des anti-thrombotiques. Cot\u00e9e au NASDAQ, cette soci\u00e9t\u00e9 a ensuite \u00e9t\u00e9 rachet\u00e9e par Millenium Pharmaceuticals.   <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Promue Directrice de Recherche en 1990, elle revient au Laboratoire du Professeur Jean ROSA, \u00e0 l\u2019H\u00f4pital Henri Mondor de Cr\u00e9teil avant de devenir, en 1992, Directrice du Centre de Recherche Public Sant\u00e9 (CRP-Sant\u00e9) li\u00e9 au CNRS et \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 du Luxembourg, poste occup\u00e9 jusqu\u2019en 2006. La politique de recherche du CRP-Sant\u00e9 \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s novatrice \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque en s\u2019inscrivant d\u00e9j\u00e0 au carrefour de trois pr\u00e9occupations majeures : l\u2019excellence scientifique, la demande sociale et la capacit\u00e9 des partenaires \u00e0 valoriser leurs innovations. <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Pendant de nombreuses ann\u00e9es, depuis sa nomination en 1992, elle si\u00e8ge au Comit\u00e9 National de la Recherche Scientifique, membre du bureau de la section \u00ab Th\u00e9rapeutique et m\u00e9dicaments : concepts et moyens \u00bb en 2000. Son influence dans les \u00e9valuations est remarquable de par ses comp\u00e9tences scientifiques et surtout par le ton qu\u2019elle donne aux d\u00e9bats : rigueur, culture scientifique, neutralit\u00e9, immense respect dans les d\u00e9bats qu\u2019elle m\u00e8ne de mani\u00e8re directe et toujours pertinente. <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Grande sp\u00e9cialiste des plaquettes sanguines et des int\u00e9grines, elle publie des travaux majeurs dans ce domaine et notamment sur la taline, une prot\u00e9ine multifonctionnelle importante dans la connexion des int\u00e9grines au cytosquelette des cellules.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">C\u2019est alors que l\u2019attirance ancienne pour l\u2019Asie la conduit \u00e0 devenir Chercheur au P\u00f4le Sino-Fran\u00e7ais de recherche en sciences du vivant et en g\u00e9nomique \u00e0 l\u2019H\u00f4pital Ruijin de Shanghai, affili\u00e9 \u00e0 la Facult\u00e9 de M\u00e9decine de la prestigieuse Universit\u00e9 Jiatong \u00e0 Shanghai de 2007 \u00e0 2012.
